Astrion has an exciting opportunity for a Material Engineer I for the RWESS, supporting the Army.




LOCATION: Redstone Arsenal, AL






  • Must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Material Engineering from an accredited university
  • Zero (0) to Three (3) years of experience performing engineering duties in designing, construction, and testing aircraft missiles, and spacecraft; and conducting basic and applied research to evaluate adaptability of materials and equipment to aircraft design and manufacture.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance (U.S. Citizenship is required for all applicants)
  • Must be familiar with various ferrous and nonferrous metallic material properties, and the relationship between material properties and microstructure to identify improper processing techniques.
  • Candidate should have an understanding in the mechanical behavior of various ferrous and nonferrous metallic materials.
  • The ability to interpret the appropriate drawings, Technical Data Packager, specification, DMWR, technical manual, ect. to determine conformance to requirements.
  • Ability to understand engineering terminology and communicate effectively with others.
  • Write technical reports that include various testing data of a component in relation to drawing and processing requirements.
  • Review peer reports for grammatical and technical accuracy.
  • Organizational and time management skills a must.
  • Must be able to work as a team member in a collaborative effort, taking initiative at times when direction is implicit.
  • Experience with MS Word, MS Excel, and Outlook desired.




  • Familiarity with various materials characterization equipment and their limitation, including but not limited to Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), Scanning electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS), Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (AES), hardness testing, micro-hardness testing, and conductivity testing.
  • Comfortable with determining the appropriate testing equipment or testing specifications required to verify requirements provided in drawings or industry/military specifications.
  • Familiarity with effective etchants and chemistry required to perform metallurgical analysis of various ferrous and nonferrous materials.





  • Responsibilities will include collecting various evidence of material properties by performing various material characterization tasks including metallographic evaluations to determine:
    • microstructure
    • verification
    • determination of alloy composition
    • using various elemental analysis tools.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting a variety of tests using established methods and procedures.
